Eclipse (sort of)
This past Sunday there was a "hybrid" eclipse of the sun. It's called a hybrid eclipse because depending upon your location, you could see anything from a partial eclipse to a full eclipse. The east coast of the US saw just a partial eclipse, but if you were in equatorial Africa you got to see the full eclipse.
For me, it was a very, very partial eclipse. The moon rose two minutes before the sun and that should have allowed the east coast to see up to 54% of the sun covered. However, low hanging clouds on the horizon blocked my view of the eclipse until the very last moment. These pictures were taken on the beach in Sandbridge.
Interesting how the reflection in my lens is reversed. |

Virginia Beach Sunrise
Well, not the actual sunrise. Too cloudy on the horizon to see that. But the sun did finally rise above the clouds!

Andrea Passes By
Tropical Storm Andrea passed near by today. Lots of heavy rain this morning and strong, gusty winds this evening.

Halo before the Storm
A Halo around the sun or moon can be a precursor to stormy weather. High cirrus clouds, usully above 20,000 feet, can preceed a storm. The ice crystals in the clouds refract the light from, in this case the sun, and form the halo. I saw this halo on Thursday, around lunchtime, a few hours before Tropical Storm Andrea arrived in the Outer Banks.
