Driving South from Estes Park along Colorado State Route 7

The eastern slope of Longs Peak - 14,259 feet to the top!

Drove around a bend in the road and came upon this little chapel, seemingly in the middle of nowhere.  St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, also known as the Chapel on the Rock.  It was built in the 1930's and was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993.  Currently it is in the midst of a major renovation after a 100 years flood destroyed the natural terrain around it in 2013.  The chapel itself was left untouched, but because of the renovations we were unable to go inside it.

A statue of Jesus stands on a hill overlooking St. Catherine of Siena Chapel.
The right side of the photo shows a good view of the erosion of the terrain caused by the flood in 2013.
